In match 3 games, players can manipulate tiles on a grid in order to create matches. Over the past 21 years, new design and innovation of this game genre has been evolve. (Juul,2007) This essay will show that many people play match 3 games around the world. Even though match 3 games are very similar to each other, people enjoy them because it is easy to play and program. There are also convenient to download and play. It also allows people to be social and challenging. These are the reasons for the popularity of match 3 games.

There are some negatives to match 3 games. This formula of the games is very similar to each other, which can also make people feel bored. From Bejeweled to Candy Crush, these games overuse the same mechanics in similar games style. In both these games, players use the same swap function to create the match. According to Polygon, there are more than 2200 match 3 games that almost share similar titles and names because of easy programming by the developers. Therefore, the saturated market frequently faces criticism for lack of innovation. The truth to the criticisms are most match 3 games are video game clones which use the similar core mechanic of match 3 games (Jonathan,2016).

Despite these criticisms, Match 3 games are very popular. In fact, they are the top category of games (Leonov, 2014). First of all, match 3 games are simple for game developers to learn to program and create the game. The basic definitions of match 3 games are grid, cell, tile, block, color, gravity, clear, line, combo, and cascades. This is the important key to create a simple match 3 games. Because the evolution of the match 3 games has occurred more incrementally it is easier to analyze the match 3 games compared to other game genres (Lien,2014). The first match 3 puzzle game was Bejeweled which was released in 2000. This game used the basic concept of colorful diamonds and also one of the flagship of match 3 puzzle game. Popcap, the creator of Bejeweled estimates 10 billion hours by roughly 500 million people for a simple and most mirrored puzzle game mechanics (Lofgren,2015). As a result, game developer know that match 3 games are easy to program in the game genre than other. Moreover, some games have come up with different variety of rules and playing style like Zuma, Candy Crush, Jewel Mania, Puzzle Bobble and more.  Zuma rules is to shoot the bubbles to create match before the queue reach the end while Candy Crush rule is to swap the tiles to create match with limited moves available. Therefore, this game genres are very saturated with different option of game style to play and bring new ideas to create different type of match 3 games.

Furthermore, match 3 games are also popular because of the technology. Most match 3 games are playable on the app store because players can use mobile phone to swipe on screen to play. With such technologies, people tend to find that match 3 games are free to play (The future of match 3,2012).  In fact, most match 3 games had the amount of playable content also had a significant role in any free2play mobile games’ commercial potential. The vast majority of match 3 games offer 100 levels for players to complete before the next update as there are not much ways to increase the horizontal scope of match 3 games (Paul,2015). Moreover, Facebook also access even more match 3 games for players. It was also a free social network for publicity, advertisement, and sponsors. There are more than 800 million users in Facebook which becoming the center of attention of people in several aspects. As a result, game developers can use this media to publish the match 3 game to Facebook (Toshio,2012). People who use Facebook can access those games to play. With this social media technology, game developers can advertise the match 3 games to attract those players who use in Facebook. As a result, match 3 game also rely on social media technology.

Finally, match 3 games are also give social and challenging experience. This also brought simple linear level progression by introducing more new levels for the players. As such, game developers create new exciting challenges to test the players for more reward. (Labs,2014).  According to that, game designer’s objectives is to create experiences for players’ attention. Most match 3 games like Candy Crush series got attract by players because of numerous of levels and players can compete each other for higher score (Omori,2012). Moreover, match 3 puzzle also make people get addictive. To illustrate, people who plays Candy Crush were easily manipulated not just simple game and colorful candies, but also more challenging levels. This allow players to win and pass levels to gain better satisfaction. Those mini rewards that players earned allow player’s brains to release the neurochemical dopamine and tap into the same neuro-circuitry which cause the player keep continue on to play and got addict to the Candy Crush (Smith,2014). Therefore, social people receive more challenging experience from match 3 games.

In conclusion, match 3 game are easy to program for people to play more challenging levels with social media technology. Despite those negative effect of the game genre, people believe that it’s was fun to develop many variety of match 3 games for players to enjoy. As game developer, create a match 3 games with generated ideas can attract people to play which make this game genre very popular.

Response of Danger in Video Games (Week 11)

The reason I brought here is the danger of the video games that put them in vanish history of gaming center.

First, video games had the huge amount of system which had the ability to store the data that was currently save for the past few years but cannot transfer to the newest system. Because the generation of gaming were evolving during the process so any past sequel were missing at the moment. Game development should recommend to make the reboot to reinforce the sequel that they previous done. Example: Pokemon Gold and Pokemon Silver is the previous generations in 1999 while Pokemon Heart Gold and Pokemon Soul Silver is the newest remade of Gold and Silver which added new content for players to enjoys.

Next, some games were created yet cancelled before it released. Game developers could had face some problems where the games project may be so difficult to make because of the failing system or there was a limited data to create a new game for the higher definition. However, it was not easy to create a great games as players want games to be innovative. Therefore, game developers need more time to make a good innovative game, but sometimes it was not necessary to be the case.

Finally, any video games can be one of their fans for them to keep. Fans love the game franchise because game developer create the game need to record as history to allow players to find out more about the games they never heard of. So don’t go waste on the games that were cancelled as game developers use more time and work to make game for players to enjoy.

On this blog, it was explained that “No Man’s Sky” is a sci-fi version of ‘Minecraft’. Players are free to enjoy what they want to explore the galaxy world.

“No Man’s Sky” is a great sandbox game where players can examine the space station, use different weapons, and discover mystery creature on different plants. Nowadays, like Space Invaders or any sci-fi theme are all focus on space shooter games. People were tried on space shooter games because of the focus on the game space based on the rule-base. So they want to try the sci-fi game in exploration experience.

The environment are pretty good which give the players feel the imaginary world of how the sci-fi fantasy world is. Players want to experience on what they like to explore and to achieve their need. Personally, I believe that “No Man’s Sky” give the players the new experience of the sci-fi genre. Game designer did their good job on the new beautiful graphics and the experience of the different sci-fi game mechanics.

Game Story Disappointment (Week 9)

I want to talk why people want to buy the game with shorter time of game play. People were disappointing about the game story was too short, take around 3 – 4 hours to finish. Do we really want to paid a lot of money to buy the game with less game play just to satisfy our excitement?

Just to clarify, to price of the video games depend on the type of play style. For example, the adventure mode will take about 2 – 10 hours of game play. RPG will take 1 – 2 weeks to finish. Online multiplayer games can be endless time of game play. However, some game modes can be intermix each other. The price should be less for adventure games because game programmers usually take a weeks to create the game for purchase. Despite the genre from story or movie, they should take the minimum price for their video game if the duration of the game was short or perhaps free of charge if the game play was very short.

Lastly, for those who complaint about the games were bad, it was not necessary to say that. Because, game programmers need to take more time to figure out how they able to function the video game. However, maybe some game programmers had lack some details which players are not satisfied but that doesn’t mean that they should work more concept of manipulate from the story and movie. People nowadays are tried of reading the books, so video games are another option for them to enjoy. I suggest any positive feedback should help game programmers to improve the system of video game that reflect the story they wanted.

Boring Video Games??? (Week 8)

I have read about the article about “Video Games are Boring”. I realize there are some conditions where person talking his friends about video games.

First of all, games doesn’t necessary to be boring. Players willing to play or not, it’s depend on the video game itself. Some video games which are short can be boring while other can bring the players what they want to play. Game designer can tell them about the concept of the game where people love it.

Secondly, people should not discourage the game designer. As a game designer, they need to understand the importance of video games. It’s bring people for entertainment and also excitement. For example, when we play ‘Overwatch’, we love how we getting excited on the character we played because they are fun.

Even those people who hate video games started to approach the video games more often. But sometimes, it was very difficult to think on what they actually love to play? However, there are some missing parts where players realize that they love to play video games doesn’t feel that reaction on how good the graphics are. Graphics is the best part to reflect the players for more attraction.

Lastly, I would say that they need to have the experience they care about based on what they love from movies and books. Create a good video game are very important to catch their fans attention and the experience on what they really want. To anyone, video games are not boring at all.

Opinion on creator of C&C: Red Alert 3 Expansion (Week 7)

After hearing on Tone Episode 10, I was thinking about the game that I played before called: C&C: Red Alert 3: Uprising.

The creator did the job well for adding the origin of psychic commando story, because as many Red Alert 3 fans who had play the original game, want to know how does it happen and why they create a character that join the Empire army. For the creator of the C&C: Red Alert 3 like Amir Rao, want to expand the progress of the upcoming game of Red Alert 3: Uprising as to allow the fan to understand the origin of psychic commando.

This bring those players, including me who play C&C Red Alert series love to find out the mystery of the expansion story. More story of the campaign brings the players  more excited to know how this goes. However, the important core of this game is RTS game, creator should focus on the core game where players more concentrate on build and conquer style of game play, not just RPG style.

In conclusion, creators adding extra features of the game is an optional choice where players want to see some new content if they were interested. This also give bonus to anyone who had play  C&C: Red Alert 3: Uprising.

Is Super Mario Maker make a horrible game? (Week 6)

Super Mario franchise is a fascinating game for 30 years. Every people loves this iconic red plumber saving princess from Mushroom Kingdom. And Super Mario Maker gave the players to create your own levels and play it as much as they love. Whatever is from simple range to impossible levels. There was fun to enjoy the game.

When I read this blog, I was curious about the worst part of the Super Mario Maker from The Washington Post by Micheal Thomsen. He talked about the bad comedy and the worst creation of the game. He also demanded that “Super Mario Maker”engine for circulating bad ideas and broken gimmicks of the game system.

As for my opinion, Super Mario Maker is the best sandbox games for the Mario fans. Everybody love to try more creative levels for the players to try. It gave them a great challenge for players to try. I don’t think is the worst creation of the game. Creator wanted to try something new for players to experience on. The mechanics of sandbox style level creations and testing the new levels is the best choice for Mario fans to dream of created their own Mario levels. Do you think Super Mario Maker is the worst game compared to several ‘Super Mario Bros’ games?

 

Game brighten up the storytelling. (Week 5)

Story are the tales of imagination for interesting viewers to enjoy. However,  I felt nowadays few people were boring to read millions and millions of text under 100, 150 or 200 or more pages to read the complete story.While, game developers working on to develop their own video game, some decide create a game which based on the story they heard of. The developers did the job done to manipulate the idea of how they worked, or create their own story based on their idea. However, it was a hard work and more time to figure out the video game based on their story idea.

Based on the research from this blog, it turns out that the good game come up with a good story. To my opinion, a good story writer need to come up with the full complete circle. Game developers need to get the attention of the readers and show interest of their favorite story. To fulfill readers imagination, few games were created either refresh the new idea or create an entire new story for the fan who interest and enjoy the game.

So how would you able to make a game based on the new story?  Well, good writers must come up the new idea based on the characters, theme, and plot to get game developers to work with idea of the story. Some games might had mash-up and all the sudden idea, leading the gamer to question or uninterested the imagination story they read about.

Is it a terrible plot or some misleading event that may shock you? Are you hate the game when you come across  unexpected plot story that you ended up with? Should the game need to brighten the story? If yes, how would game developer able to fresh up the idea? It’s your opinion to think about it. I find that it’s okay to brighten up the story from game as long as it is entertain to the viewers and gamers.

What can be learned from mistakes in game design? This week the BBC published an interview with a former developer who survived one of the most infamous mistakes in games history, and Tom Francis examined how XCOM’s mistakes could be repaired.

About the BBC news stated from ‘the worst video game in history’, Steven Spielberg create an Atari called ‘ET’ in his rush hour. However, it’s become very popular to the gamers. It was last until April 2014, where the game was thrown in New Mexico. He stated that he never believe he thought it was absurd.

According to the problem of ‘XCOM’, limited squad number, low profile missions and leveling system are the problems that gamers were complaining. So the question is, what is the problem  of this solution.

To my opinion, video games sometimes have a bit of mistake to certain players. How they feels of playing them? These are the responsible of people who feels what need to change? It’s clearly that developer needs to fix the solution of the game or they think it’s okay. Any people can respond about the game they develop and testing so that game developer can redo the game with better results.

We both are humans and making mistake is very common, including game developer. I agree what I read about it, so it’s not bad to say that game needs to change, after all, just a small fix will do.
